WILLY FOUBERT
May 19, 1928 – October 26, 2012

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Willy Foubert announces his passing.
Willy is survived by his children Ken (Lil) and Carol (Dave); grandchildren, Steven and Laura brother Eddy (Florence) and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Anna and Frank and his wife Rose.
In his younger years, Willy was as light on his feet as Fred Astaire and that is how he met his dear wife Rose. He worked for many years at McGavins Bakery as a shipper/receiver where he was valued by all. As many can attest, dad was mischievous and there are many stories such as him siphoning beer from his family’s brewery barrels, to being accident prone and getting his head stuck in an elevator. Following retirement, Willy started recycling with his brother Eddy and they became avid scrap metal collectors, long before it was considered resourceful. His family was his pride and joy and he was always generous with his time, his advice and support.
We consider ourselves fortunate to have had such a loving and kind mentor, father, papa, brother and friend.
In compliance with Dad’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at his Interment.
We extend a special thank-you to the care teams at the Grace and the St. Boniface Hospital for their vigilance in assisting Willy throughout this difficult period and also to his many dear friends at the Kiwanis Courts who made every day an enjoyable adventure.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends may choose to donate to a charity of choice, or to take a moment to share a special memory of Willy. We have lost a kind and gentle man, one with a little twinkle in his eye.

“We love you Dad – Papa, miss you dearly and will cherish your memories.”

ANITA ANNE GROOM
(nee HLADY)

Anita Anne Groom (nee Hlady), 86, loving wife of Bruce and devoted mother of sons Rick, Larry and Stacey, passed away peacefully at the Tuxedo Villa personal care home on the evening of Friday, October 12, 2012. She is survived by her adoring husband Bruce; devoted sons Rick, Larry and Stacey; their loving wives Chris, Leslie and Sharon; and treasured grandchildren Thomas, Jonathon, Lauren, Laina and Brendan plus numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
On April 5, 1926 Anita Anne (or “Honya” in Ukrainian) Hlady was born in East Kildonan to George and Maria Hlady who originally came to Canada from Ukraine some years before. Anita’s father was a factory worker at Swift’s Meat Packing Plant in Winnipeg. Her mother was a proud, hardworking woman, faithful wife and homemaker. For Anita, Maria and George were always known as ‘Baba’ and ‘Guido’ as they are, in fact, remembered to this day by family and their many friends in the neighbourhood and throughout Winnipeg.
Anita was one of six children; including her older brothers Walter and John, older sister Molly and younger brothers Don and Paul—all of whom predeceased her. She cherished memories of growing up in their warm, cozy and, at times, crowded home on Ottawa Avenue. Blessed with great physical beauty, and a true, one-of-a-kind personality that was equal parts passion, patience, perseverance and grace; she will long be remembered for her genuine love of people, her unforgettable sense of humour and her gifts for listening and storytelling.
Over the years, Anita never tired of sharing tales from her life with her husband, siblings, children and grandchildren—especially how her mother Maria carefully fed the baby chicks that kept warm beneath the wood-burning stove in their kitchen. This and other treasured episodes were lovingly recounted by Anita over many a festive feast of home-cooked perogies, roast pork, halobchis, kolbassa and keysta soup which always brought the Groom and Hlady clans together for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, anniversaries and birthdays.
While working as a clerk at Eaton’s downtown mail order department, Anita first met and soon married the ever-persistent and smitten-to-this-day Bruce Groom in 1948. Two years later, Anita and Bruce moved to live and work in the Big City of Toronto. Not long afterward, the couple agreed that they really belonged ‘back home in Winnipeg’. So they returned in 1953. During this time they moved into their first home on Craig Street and later, on Dearborn Avenue—where they enthusiastically welcomed their first-born, Rick, to the world. Five years later, their son Larry arrived as did their youngest son Stacey in 1963. All three boys grew up in what ultimately became the Groom family residence on Conway Street in St. James for 50 years. In the decades that followed, Anita and Bruce were proud and delighted to see their three sons graduate from high school and attend university and college, start their careers, marry and put down roots of their own—all within walking distance of one another in Silver Heights.
Among Anita’s many life-long loves were family vacations and shopping. Over the years, she enjoyed their frequent trips to Grand Beach, Victoria Beach, Matlock, Grand Forks, Fargo and Minneapolis together with those very special times when she and Bruce travelled to Europe, England, Scotland and Wales where they toured the amazing cities of London, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice and Rome and their lovely, surrounding countrysides.
A list of Anita’s favourite things would have to include spending quiet quality time with her husband and grandkids and their dogs, cuddling babies, Italian food at the Paradise Restaurant, clothes and shoes, reading bestsellers and Hello! magazine, savourng her favourite movies like Casablanca, The Godfather, The Commitments, Educating Rita, Fabulous Baker Boys, Quick Change,The Russians Are Coming,It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and, of course ... British TV—especially Coronation Street and EastEnders. She also loved collecting decorative ornaments, dancing and enjoying the music of her precious Herb Alpert, Bert Kampfert, Matt Monro, Tom Jones, Helmut Lotti, the BeeGees and—Mama Mia!—Abba.
In 2002 while dutifully tending her beloved backyard flowerbeds, Anita suffered a stroke. In recent years, her capacity to verbally communicate diminished, but not her love of family, friends, life and the world around her. As this condition and her physical health took an unfortunate downturn, Anita became a patient of the Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home—where she received the very best in care by the dedicated, attentive staff at station 3—especially Edna, Louise and Bev.
In compliance with Anita’s wishes, there will be no Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that mourners make donations in her honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 – 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.

CECELIA (PEGGY) MOORE

(nee GLOVER)

October 30, 1918 – October 12, 2012

Mom peacefully passed away in her sleep on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Tuxedo Villa Personal Care home at the age of 93 years.

Peggy will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband Bill of nearly 73 years of marriage; brother Norm; children Bill (Ruth), Jackie, Ross (Leslie) and Penny (Marvin); as well she will be missed by her numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces; nephews and friends.  She was predeceased by her parents Sam and Annie (Glover), brothers John (Jack), Harry and Don.

Mom grew up on south Parkview Street in St. James in the days when the banks of the Assiniboine River and the river itself were a major recreation attraction for all ages.   She attended Assiniboine School and Linwood High School.  Being the only girl in the family and growing up with 4 rowdy brothers provided Mom with special memories that she fondly remembered throughout her life.

Our Mom and Dad first met casually through their love of skating at Mason’s Skating Rink. The relationship evolved and after a short courtship they married in November 1939. Their first child (Bill) was born in September 1940.  War had already broken out in Europe by the time they got married and, when Bill was but 18 days old, Dad along with countless others left to serve his country. During the ensuing 5 years Mom raised a small child alone with little money or food. Then tragedy struck when within a year she lost two of her brothers. Jack (RCAF air-gunner lost in the North Sea) in 1940 and Harry (appendicitis) in 1941. One fond memory she occasionally spoke of during those times was of a young RAF airman who was in Canada under the Commonwealth Air Training Plan and was boarding across the street. She would laugh when she related that he used to get grounded if he got home after curfew. Mom said he also liked to read poetry.  His name was Richard Burton.  Yes, that Richard Burton.  Then one day in 1945 amidst the pandemonium on the platform at Winnipeg’s Canadian Pacific Railway Station after the arrival of a trainload of returning soldiers, Mom and Dad were once again and permanently reunited.  The following 67 years were ones of unconditional love, devotion and dedication to each other.

Despite raising 4 kids to help make ends meet Mom also worked outside the home. Among other places she worked was the Women’s Tribute Memorial Lodge, the Charleswood Motor Hotel, and for the Assiniboine School District.  On top of all of that she somehow found time to volunteer in her community. Just a few examples are the many years she gladly gave to the Royal Canadian Legion, local community club and until deteriorating health dictated otherwise over 10 years at the Muffin Stop at the Grace Hospital.

Mom and Dad spent their 5 final years living together at the Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence.  The family is deeply grateful to all of the staff there, including the many renewed and new friendships they forged making those years so enjoyable. The entire family also owes a debt of gratitude to Betty Moore and Mom’s special friend and knitting partner Gwen Stephens for their love, care and companionship. “One person caring about another represents life’s greatest value.”

Mom truly and thoroughly enjoyed her life, her family and friends. She believed that life was better when you were laughing. She had a wonderful sense of humour right up to the end.  Mom was an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to know her.   She was spiritually strong and did not fear death.

In compliance with Mom’s wishes there will be no Funeral Service.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home, especially Mom’s earthly angels Carmen, Helen and Val.  Charles Dickens spoke of people like them.   “A heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.”

I stood watching as the little ship sailed out to sea.  The setting sun tinted its white sails with a golden light.  As it disappeared from view, a voice at my side whispered “She is gone”.  But the sea was a narrow one, and on the furthest shore a band of long missed family and friends had gathered to watch in happy expectation.  Suddenly, they caught sight of the tiny sail.  At the very moment when the voice had whispered “She is gone”, a glad shout went up in joyous welcome with the words, “Here she comes”!
