ANNE MARIE NICOL
(nee MURPHY)
July 24, 1941 – April 19, 2014

On Saturday, April 19, 2014 Anne passed away suddenly with her family by her side.
Anne will be greatly missed by her husband John of 52 years; son Tod, his wife Heidi and their daughter Sabina; daughter Joanna, her husband Bill and their sons Nicholas and Brendan; son Chad, his wife Anna and their daughter Olivia; brothers, Bryan (children Judy and Bryan Jr.), Lynn and Terry.
Anne was born and raised in Chatham, New Brunswick where she met John when he was a member of the Air Force. From there they moved with John’s postings to France, Trenton, Winnipeg, Gander, and then residing in Winnipeg for the remainder of her life.
Working at the Golden West Retirement Lodge was a job Anne really enjoyed. She enjoyed being with the residents and her fellow co-workers.
Anne loved spoiling her grandchildren and they loved their Nana. She leaves all her children and grandchildren with the knowledge that they were truly loved. She had many cherished friendships over the years.  She cared for everyone she knew, whether you were her family, friend or a member of the community and she was always willing to help out someone in need.
Anne loved the outdoors which was usually evident by her tanned complexion. She was happiest with the sun shining on her face. Anne really enjoyed playing bingo and her trips to the casino.  She recently filled one of her bucket list items by vacationing in Las Vegas. She loved country music and travelling with the girls each year (for over 25 years) to We Fest.
Anne’s family wishes to extend their thanks to the attentive staff at Health Science Centre, MICU who helped keep her comfortable in her final days.
In compliance with Anne’s wishes a private family ceremony will take place.

JANET BUSH
(nee HILL)

The family of Janet Bush is sad to announce her passing on Monday, April 21, 2014 at the age of 67 years.
Janet is survived by her son Cameron (Steven); daughter Kaleigh (Shawn); sisters Norah Campbell and Carol Nichol; brother-in-law Gary Nichol; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Dan; mother Dora; father Richard; and brother Ricky, who passed away in early childhood.
Mom was born in Vita, Manitoba and spent most of her early childhood living in the Southeastern part of the province, with periods in Badger, Marchand and finally Hadashville, where she made lifelong friends in Florence and Dennis Kupiak. She grew up in a tightknit family, and remained close to her sisters throughout her life. After the sudden passing of their father when Mom was a girl, the family moved to Winnipeg where she graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and later attended secretarial college. Mom initially worked as a legal secretary, before spending many years at Pool Elevators.
During this time Mom met and married Dan, and together they enjoyed trips to Europe, Bermuda, Florida and Hawai’i, the memories of which she always treasured. Mom stayed home following the arrival of her kids but later returned to the workforce, including positions at The Safety Centre and, in the years immediately preceding her retirement, at Chicken Delight Head Offices. Though she lived with chronic health issues for the last few years, Mom had many more good days than bad, and was grateful for her extended periods of good health.
Mom had a great many pastimes over the years, most of them creative—photography, gardening, crafting, reading and flower arranging were a few among many. Most of all, Mom loved people: she cherished her friends and loved her whole extended family; she always valued and cared for her neighbours and community; and she would happily talk to almost anyone. She was friendly and generous, and liked to laugh with people. She will be deeply missed.
On Wednesday, April 30, 2014 Janet’s Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive.
The family wishes to thank all of Mom’s healthcare providers for their compassionate care, especially Dr. Wayne Poon, Dr. Pat Harris and her homecare provider, Darlene.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.

ADEENA (DEENA) ALMA GAUDHE
(NEE WEISS)

Quietly, in the early hours of Wednesday, April 23, 2014, age 89, this amazing woman was granted her angel wings and joyfully traveled to her forever home in heaven wrapped in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; it is the gift of God”.
With Deena’s passing we remind others that her life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss her every day, she will forever remain in our hearts. Remaining to forever cherish Deena’s memory are her two beloved daughters; Donna Barclay and husband Stan; grandchildren Michael and Melissa Barclay; Wendy Holm and husband Brian; grandsons Cory Bell, Jeffrey Bell and his wife Jessica Ross with great-grandchildren Jacob and Jewel Bell; and granddaughter Rebecca Holm. She is also survived by two remaining sisters Anne Barnes and Doreen Braiden; numerous nieces; nephews and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm and Matilda Weiss; sisters Esther, Adelma, Amy; brothers Leonard, Elmer and Leslie, all of whom she dearly missed. It will bring Deena great joy to finally be with those loved ones that have gone before.
Deena grew up in Winnipeg on Alexander Avenue and later relocated to Sherburn Street where she lived in the family home until she purchased her own home in Charleswood. Deena worked as an executive secretary for the Red Cross Society for over 32 years with many wonderful staff and coworkers.  After retiring she took extreme pride in her home where she loved gardening and sitting on the swing in the yard with her much loved dog Jillie. She enjoyed watching her TV shows and was an avid sports fan, as well as being very artistic especially with knitting, oil painting, needlepoint and paper toile.
In essence, Deena was a remarkable amazing woman.  A single mother in the 50’s was never easy but she managed to constantly display her strength and determination to improve her situation and she did just that. Stubborn, strong willed and fiercely independent, a strong yet loving unstoppable religious spirit right to the end. Deena was the most loving Mother, Sister, Daughter, Nana, Auntie and loyal friend. Deena’s two daughters would like to thank all those wonderful family and friends who visited. Your visits gave her much cheer and comfort. Special thanks to Theresa, Linda and Barb for being her good friends and confidantes for so many years.
You are in a better place now. The gifts you have given to each and every one of us are ours forever, your countless stories, laughter, words of wisdom, the memories you created for all of us, and always your unwavering love. You are in our hearts forever and we will love you always.  A private family Interment will be held.

CHINA TO BAN ALL BURIALS AFTER JUNE 1, 2014

Elderly Chinese people committing suicide before end of the month to avoid province's looming ban on burials

  • Anhui province, China, is to ban all burials after June 1
  • Anyone who dies after the deadline will have to be cremated
  • Officials smash up coffins to drive the point home

Dozens of elderly Chinese people have been killing themselves to avoid a looming ban on burials.
The elderly suicides want to make sure their deaths are registered before a June 1 deadline, after which Anhui province authorities will close all cemeteries.
Anyone who dies after that date will have to be cremated because, authorities say, cemeteries are taking up too much space.
A father pushes his baby down a road past a pile of coffins smashed by officials to drive home the looming ban on burials brought in because cemeteries are taking up too much space in Anhui province, China
A father pushes his baby down a road past a pile of coffins smashed by officials to drive home the looming ban on burials brought in because cemeteries are taking up too much space in Anhui province, China

In order to drive the message home council officials have been visiting funeral parlours and smashing up coffins.
The draconian move has only hastened the rate of suicide as elderly people rush to guarantee one of the few remaining.
The new rules were published on April 1. Regional officials said: 'Before June 1 people can still consign their bodies for burial, but after that the only option offered will be cremation.'
In urban areas it has meant little change, but in rural areas the idea of cremation is abhorrent to many and there has been extreme opposition.

Local media has reported dozens of cases in which elderly people have killed themselves in order to qualify for a burial.
Zhang Wenying, 81, hanged herself on May 13. She left behind a note saying she had ended it all to make sure she could have a decent death, and she expected to be buried.
Another was 97-year-old Wu Lixiu, who died on May 12.
There have also been deaths in the provincial capital, and in three villages elders recorded at least seven people who have committed suicide to make sure they are buried instead of cremated.
'It's hard for the old people to accept the policy, so the government should give them more time to think about it, but not carry out the policy on such short notice,' said one elder.

ANDREW DONALD GALLIE

In loving memory of Andrew Donald Gallie, son, uncle, brother and popular friend of many.Born June 22, 1966, Andrew passed away from cancer on Friday, May 23, 2014 at the age of 47 years.
Left to mourn Andrew’s memory are his mother Anne Gallie; father Don Gallie (Joan); sister Liz Moffatt; nephew Regan Moffatt (Erin); niece Andrea Guthrie (Sheldon); great nephews Jaxon and Jace; and niece Nicola Moffatt. Also missing him are aunt Beverley Bonner; cousin Paula Bonner (Daryl Hornby) Jack, Kate; and numerous close friends.
Growingup in St. James, Andrew graduated from Silver Heights Collegiate. His love of music led him to pursue an education in sound engineering (1986) at the Columbia Academy of Radio, TV and Recording Arts in Vancouver, BC. After graduating, he returned to Winnipeg and joined his father in the family business and acquired the skills and developed the art of becoming a well-respected grain trader in the pit of the Winnipeg Commodity  Exchange. It was there Andrew enjoyed the camaraderie and contact with many colleagues and associates who remained good friends when the trading floor closed (2004) and went to electronic trading.
Andrew felt fortunate to have spent many winter weekends and summers growing up at the family ski cottage at La Riviere where he established many long-term friendships. It was there he developedan appreciation of rural life, farming and the fun times to be had outside of an urban setting.
People were drawn to Andrew because he was full of life with a charismatic personality and hada good sense of humour. He was respected and loved by many. Andrew's home was his castle and his door was always open with a beverage of choice close at hand, a tune playing, and a conversation or story on the 'tip of his tongue' ready for an intrigued listener or two!He truly cared for his family and friends of all ages and was sincerely interested in their lives and what they had to say, although not afraid to voice his opinions on many matters. He enjoyed his quaint castle on the river and was excited about fulfilling many of his home renovation projects, some of which were completed and some still pending.
Andrew was a determined soul with a positive attitude throughout his fight with cancer. The disease did not shatter his hope, destroy his confidence or alter his friendships. He has left many lasting cherished memories for those around, even as his struggle became increasingly difficult. He showed incredible strength and maintained a sense of humour throughout it all.
A Celebration of Andrew’s Life will take place on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 2:00p.m. in the Royal Room at the Viscount Gort Hotel, 1670 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.
Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 6975 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9

ELIZABETH (BETTY) CRAWFORD
March 9, 1919 – May 24, 2014

Peacefully, at the Victoria Hospital, with family present, Betty passed into what she called her final deep sleep and into the arms of her loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Left to remember Betty’s happy smile and upbeat personality are sons Laird (Erma) and Frank (Christian); along with those special people who knew her variously as their adopted “Mom,” “Grandma” or just Betty – friends who remained from first meeting her. She was predeceased by husband David in 2003.
Betty and David’s early years in Pine Falls were interrupted by Dave’s service during WW II, but continued on with steady work for him at “The Mill,” until retirement allowed them to spend winters in Arizona for 11 years. Becoming snow-birds was the result of their first winter of retirement being spent at Bird Lake in their cabin, with no running water and an outhouse up the hill. Talk about a wake-up call! Their home in Pine Falls was replaced by another one in Broadlands, and from there they moved to Winnipeg where they re-located several times to apartments.
Betty’s Funeral Service and Interment will be at a later date in Calgary, AB., and she will be buried along with her husband Dave.
We’d like to thank the Doctors and staff at the Vic for their caring attention to our Mother in her time of need.
Flowers are gratefully declined, but for anyone wishing to remember Betty, she was a Victoria Hospital Foundation donor and liked the Siloam Mission.

EMIL KLEBAN

With love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Emil Kleban on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the age of 93 years.
Left to cherish Emil’s memory are his wife Zofia; son Richard (Sandra); and daughter Krystyna; as well as granddaughters, Natalia and Ashley.
Emil was born to Anastasia and Michal Kleban in Hodynie, Poland on February 27, 1921.  He and his older brother Bronak enjoyed a village lifestyle with dogs and horses until they were taken to a Russian labour camp prior to World War II.  Emil escaped from Siberia and made his way to England via South Africa where he joined the Polish Contingent of the RAF as a paratrooper.  Emil served proudly, during World War II, winning the Polish Medal of Valour, and after V.E. Day he served during the Blockade of Berlin. In November of 1947 he demobbed in Nottingham where he married Zofia Butrymowicz on December 26, 1949.
Working as a pipefitter Emil and Zofia lived in a large Polish Expatriot community in Nottingham until 1958.  Their son Richard was born in 1954 and Emil was determined to give him a better life so they left friends and family and immigrated to Canada in 1958, settling in Winnipeg.
Emil was always grateful to Joe at St. Vital Plumbing who employed him while he studied to earn his Canadian plumbing certification. Krystyna Helena was born to Emil and Zofia in Winnipeg in 1960.  Later, he accepted a job as a plumber with the University of Manitoba where he worked until his retirement in 1986.
Emil was well liked and respected by his co-workers as he was a skilled, meticulous worker who took pride in work and being a good friend. He also was very proud of the fine home that he provided for his family and the opportunities that he and Zofia provided for their children and grandchildren.
The family thanks the staff at Meadowood Manor for the respectful care they provided for Emil.
A private family Inurnment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.

GORDON ALEXANDER MACKIE
January 17, 1922 –
 April 27, 2014

After a richly blessed and generously lived life, our beloved husband and father passed away at home, on April 27, 2014 with his family by his side.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered with dignity by his wife Marguerite (Margo), sister Kay, children Heather, Craig (Jane), Holly (Keith Berg) and Bonny (Manuel Arruda); three grandsons; three great-grandchildren, and sister Kay Hermiston. Predeceased by his mother Catherine (Katie), father Alexander, first wife Margaret, sister June (Cliff Fryers).
Born in Winnipeg, Gordie demonstrated a drive for sports excellence at an early age, playing both baseball and hockey. At 15, he pitched two "No Hitters" in the provincial baseball championships to win the pennant. When his 17th birthday arrived he was introduced to boxing, a sport that would truly hone a lifelong passion.
With the declaration of the Second World War, Gordie enlisted in the Canadian Navy Reserve at 19 years of age, serving as a signalman on His Majesty's "Skeena", "Wetaskiwin", "St. Croix", "Sherbrooke", "Raccoon", and "Reindeer". His fortunes were realized early as he twice received transfers prior to the loss of two ships, torpedoed in the North Atlantic. While in the service, he boxed against all contenders Canadian or American in a "Middleweight" classification. His record of 25 fight cards ended with 21 wins, two draws and two losses.
During shore leave, he shared his love of jazz music with shipmates, attending concerts at various ports. The likes of Tommy Dorsey's and Benny Goodman's Big Bands had him front row center. He witnessed the return of Gene Krupa on drums at the Paramount Theatre in New York.
Discharged from the Navy, Gordie pursued a professional boxing stint from 1945 to 1949, where he had six Provincial and National fights, winning all but one. With a reinstatement to amateur status, he moved to Montreal to take the role of trainer and boxing instructor for the Y.M.C.A. He transferred back to Winnipeg to an assistant health director position and boxing teacher for the Y.M.C.A. and a volunteer spot at the Y.M.H.A. In 1951 he completed his post-graduate studies in Physiotherapy at a college in Chicago, IL. Successfully finishing at the top of his class, Gordie returned to Winnipeg as Physical Education director at St. Paul's College and opened the infamous Madison Boxing and Health Club in St. Boniface. That year he was head trainer for "The Norwood/St. Boniface Legionnaire" football team, winning the Dominion Junior football championship and are proud members of the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame.
The following year, Gordie was asked to be an assistant trainer for the football team at West Point Military Academy under Coach Colonel "Red" Blake and assistant coaches Vince Lombardi and Bobby Dawes. He returned two years later to take on the position of head coach of the Canadian Boxing team to compete in the British Commonwealth Games in Vancouver.
1954 witnessed the launch of Gordie's professional therapy career, as he worked for Terry Hind's "Winnipeg Goldeyes" baseball team in the summer and Jack Perrin's Winnipeg Warriors in the winter. Both teams had their successes, but the likes of Billy Mosienko, Bill Juzda and Fred Shero truly helped put Winnipeg on the international hockey scene. Gordie followed Fred Shero to Minnesota to train the Fighting Saints for a season then he got a call for a role he could not refuse. It was 1959 and Bud Grant's Winnipeg Blue Bombers were hot off a Grey Cup Championship in Vancouver against Jim Trimble's Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Along with assistant coaches Joe Zeleski and Johnny Michaels, Grant had put together a formidable balance of American talent with names like Rauhaus, Pitts, Van Pelt, Ploen, Shepard, Lewis, Grey and Rigney and "home grown" greats such as Piper, Tinsley, Latourelle, Miller, James, Miiklechuk (and many others) to win. The following 10 years gleaned Cup appearances in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1965, winning three out of five championships.
1969 Gordie left his beloved Blue and Gold for a cross-town opportunity, when he went to take on the responsibility of Head Physiotherapist and trainer for all University of Manitoba Bison sports teams. He is heralded for the co-founding of the Canadian Athletic Trainers Association and developing the first accredited "Student Trainer Programs" in the country.
1970 witnessed the launch of Gordie's international exposure as a top Canadian Therapist, first in Turin, Italy at the World Student Games, followed by Canada's entry in the Davis Cup Tennis match. He was awarded the "Outstanding Service Award" from both the Davis Cup committee, and the Winnipeg Football Club. In 1971 was the Pan American Games in Cali, Columbia followed by the Canadian Indoor Track and Field Championships. Munich, Germany hosted the summer Olympics and started Gordie's invitation to five years of being the trainer for the C.F.L. All-star games. The World Aquatic Championships were hosted in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1973 and of course 1974 had him in Moscow with the three Howe boys (Gordie, Mark and Marty) taking on the Soviets in a Team Canada tilt in hockey. Cali, Columbia played host to the World Aquatic Championships and Gordie was there to assist our athletes. That same year, The Manitoba Boxing and Wrestling Federation named him president, a position he held until 1978.
In 1967 the Manitoba Amateur Football Association honoured Gordie for his contribution, and he became the Coordinator / Therapist for boxing, wrestling and weightlifting at the Montreal Olympics. The "Bike Foundation" inducted him into their North American hall of fame and in 1978 the C.A.T.A. bestowed the same honour in their hall.
Probably his finest recognition came when the University of Manitoba established "The Gord Mackie Scholarship" program, presented annually to the student athletic therapist reaching academic excellence en route to full accreditation. He retired from the faculty with countless other sports awards, most notably the Leo Mol sculpture "Healing Hands". The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in the late 1980s and the Canadian Football Association recognized his efforts soon after. Gordie remained an active member of the Blue Bomber Alumni and a proud member of A.N.A.F. Unit #303 as the eldest Navy veteran.
In 2008 Leo Ledohowski, along with a crafty team of Blue Bomber Alumni, initiated the return of Bud Grant to present Grey Cup rings for those "Glory Years" in the late 1950s and early 1960s to all players and staff. "Ring in the night" was hosted with such eloquence by the "Voice of the Bombers", Bob Irving, and was a tribute weekend and banquet that will be remembered for years to come. A very special thank you to Canad-Inns.
The Pemby Brew House was Gordie's Saturday afternoon "Walk through Memory Lane" with jazz aficionados and good friends listening to Winnipeg's talent. George Reznik, Bob Jackson, Billy McMahon, Jimmy Gillis, Frank Burke, Craig Fotheringham, Brian Klowak, David Hildebrand, Janice Findlay...the list goes on and on, thanks to the Druxman family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Daeninck, the Home Care and Palliative Care Teams for allowing a dignified finale of Gordie's "Fourth Quarter" and final "Round".
As per Gordie's wishes, a private family service has been held. A celebration of his life is to be held May 8, at Canad Inns Polo Park from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice may be made.
