DOUGLAS ALEXANDER BROPHY
APRIL 14, 1952 – DECEMBER 5, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Douglas Alexander Brophy, at home on Friday, December 5, 2014.
Left to lovingly remember Doug are Carol, his beloved wife and best friend of 43 years; cherished daughters, Kristin (Mark) and Leah (Chuck) and granddaughter Emily (Kristin). He will be much missed by sisters-in-law, Judy (Mike) and Susanne (Gordon) of Ottawa. He leaves behind his nephews, Christopher (Andrea) and Ryan (Kari) and great nephew, Liam (Christopher/Andrea); as well as many aunts and uncles. Doug was predeceased by his dad, Alexander James on September 5, 1966 and his mom, Viola Grace on December 1, 2008.
Doug was born and raised in westend Winnipeg, the only child of Alex and Vi Brophy. He attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate (occasionally), chummed with his muscle-car friends and played and coached hockey at the Orioles Community Club. In later years he coached ringette at the Westdale Community Centre.
In the summer of 1966 Doug stole Carol’s heart while working as a dashing gas jockey at the Redboine Boating Club.  At 18 he began his career at the Department of Highways as a mail boy. He remained with the Department of Highways for 35 years, retiring at 55 as a Policy Analyst.
Not content to retire fully, Doug launched BRO Consulting Ltd. and worked with organic products for anti/de-icing on roads throughout Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. He loved running this venture from his home office and being actively engaged over the years with a host of wonderful business associates.  Doug enjoyed spending quality time with his retirement buds; Bob, Ray and Ron.  Their “meetings” resulted in many hours of laughter and storytelling!
Many years were enjoyed by Doug and Carol as members of the Redboine Boating Club on Churchill Drive. He served on the Board of Directors as Vice Commodore. When water levels changed dramatically on the Red River they chose Gimli Harbour as their next home port for many good times with family and friends. As members of Fort Whyte Centre Carol and Doug enjoyed many lunches and leisurely outdoor rambles. Winter-time travels took them to the British Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Barbados and Jamaica for much fun in the sun.  For many years Doug enjoyed duck hunting with friends and in later years his love of the outdoors had him replacing his gun with his camera. He delighted in “helping” Carol with summer garden activities. He was a great assistant albeit overly enthusiastic with chain-saw pruning!!
Doug was a unique and gentle man. With his warm and winning ways he made everyone feel special. He valued family and friends above all. He was fiercely proud always of his wife’s and daughters’ accomplishments and their steadfast devotion to strong family values.
In compliance with Doug’s wishes, there will not be a Funeral Service.
Thank you to Bob and Lori Lees, to the City of Winnipeg Paramedics and to the Winnipeg Police Department for their very capable and caring assistance.
Should you desire, memorial donations to a children’s charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Sweetheart, I will miss my oranges and morning cookie shaped in a happy face on top of the morning paper to take to work. I will miss especially your face in the window, waving and throwing a kiss to me each morning as I set off for the office. I will miss the beautiful flower bouquets you brought to me at work ‘just because’.  I love you.
Your passing leaves a huge void in our lives. We will love and miss you forever.

RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL HOME - ERNEST KARLOWSKY FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Ernie Karlowsky
April 1, 1924 – December 10, 2014

Peacefully in the afternoon of Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the age of 90 years, Ernie passed away with his family by his side, at Concordia Hospital, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Papa was “born too soon” as he would say, on “April Fool’s Day in 1924”.
Left to forever cherish Ernie’s memory are his children, Toni (Ken), Stacie (Keith), Debbie (Lorne), and Robin (Deb); his sisters Peggy McCormick and Gwen Marsch; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Judee (2006), wife Elsie (1965), and son Ronnie (2008).
The second of nine children, Ernie grew up on the farm in Brunkild, Manitoba, where he eventually settled and built his own successful farming business. Ernie’s amazing work ethic, innovative skills, and entrepreneurial spirit took him on many adventures and allowed him a multitude of wonderful experiences over his long life. After several successful farming years, Ernie ventured into the automobile industry, and he and Judee opened the Honda Trade Centre in 1979. While maintaining both the farming and car businesses, they then added to their portfolio an orange grove in Porterville, California, which they purchased in the 80’s. He and Mom would travel every year to the grove to inspect the crops, attend the Tulare County Farm Show and created lasting memories with family, and friends at Camp Nelson, Pismo Beach and beyond. Bringing back several boxes of the harvested fruit, Ernie took pleasure in gifting boxes of the sweet, fresh fruit to family and friends. In 1985, Ernie and Judee moved to Winnipeg for proximity to both the farming and car businesses, and bought a beautiful river property in the South end of the city. Family and friends will forever remember the fun times had at the Karlowsky’s boating, jet-skiing and barbequing in those summer months, and hence where Ernie was affectionately known by his grandchildren as “Papa Boat”.
An avid sports fan, Ernie was a long-time Winnipeg Jets Booster Club member where he hosted several “Jets Picnics” at his farm over the years, having players such as Willie Lindstrom and Thomas Steen, their families and friends out to the farm to take part in a friendly baseball tournament and other activities alongside the Booster Club members and their families. A devoted Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan, Ernie was a season ticket holder for 66 years, where in 1948 he saw his first game at the Osborne Stadium at Broadway and Osborne. He was very proud to have been present at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Investor’s Group Field, and was fortunate to have celebrated his 90th birthday at the Pinnacle Room at Investor’s Group Field this year, where Ernie was joined by many family and friends. In his youth, Ernie loved to participate in sports and often told stories about his years as a baseball player, and spoke excitedly about the famous “8-ender” he and his curling team achieved.
In his most recent years, Ernie continued to keep himself busy maintaining his land out in Brunkild, and was often seen cutting grass, clearing snow and driving around checking fields. His amazing example of determination, inventive drive and ambition kept this “MacGyver” going, well beyond what most people could hope to achieve. Ernie continued to enjoy dinners with his family, vacations with family and friends, and going out and about on his routines and continued work. Ernie’s endless repertoire of stories, goofy jokes, “Ernie-isms” and sense of humor will be missed by those close to him, but his legacy will also continue through us. Ernie made us the people we are today, and for that, we are thankful!
Ernie’s Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Kolleen Karlowsky-Clark, presider.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ernie’s memory, to a charity of your choice.

YANCY JOAN MARIE SLOAN
(nee HICKSON)
1938 - 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Yancy Joan Marie Sloan on the 17th day of December 2014 at the age of 76, but with fortune and joy having had Yancy as a mother and grandmother.
Yancy is survived by her sons, William Sloan (grandchildren, Rhiannon and Spencer) and Charles Sloan (spouse Marcy, grandchildren Kelsie and Morgan); as well as many relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Archibald Alexander Sloan.
Born in Flin Flon, MB. Yancy spent her adult life in Winnipeg. She was devoted to her family and when her children were young, spent countless hours volunteering at the local community center where she made many lifelong friendships
Yancy had a special interest in the activities of her children and grandchildren. It didn't matter what sport her children were playing, you could always hear from the stands, HURRY! HURRY! QUICKLY! QUICKLY! SHOOT IT! SHOOT IT!! She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, whether it be baking cookies, making crafts or swimming in her pool, it was always a great time at Grandma's. Yancy was also known to enjoy the odd game of bingo, unfortunately she wasn't able to win that “Big” pot she was always talking about.
No service will be held and in lieu of flowers, if you wish, make a donation to the organization of your choice
We would like to thank the staff at the Riverview Health Centre.

Helen Martens
(nee Spicer)
October 15, 1924 – December 25, 2014

In the presence of her family, Helen passed at the Grace Hospital after a long and productive life, on Thursday, December 25, 2014, at the age of 90 years.
Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her husband Walter, the love of her life for 70 years; daughter Jocelyn Preston, and Glenn (Ingrid); beloved grandchildren Jocelyn (Jay) and husband Mike, Reid, Erin Anne, Lauren; and brother Steve Spitzer. She was predeceased by her sister, Rose Hradowy.
Helen loved working on the trading floor at James Richardson & Sons at the Grain Exchange. She was a business woman, partner to Walter, in all their business ventures.  They were each other’s best friend and a strong team. Together they built “Abbey Rents”. She was creative and self-taught. At the age of five, she was sewing and knitting and later became a fabric artist. Helen was a hardworking and wise mother who said she had a great life and would not have traded it for all the world until declining eyesight made it difficult to read the daily obituaries. Helen was a fighter, tough and strong and loved life.
Our mother was a “depression kid” from the North end, proud of her Ukrainian heritage. Helen travelled the world wintering in Hawaii and Florida for years and could she cook!!! She was thankful for the life she had and all she was able to see and do (“It felt like a fairy tale life to an insignificant kid from the North end “.)
Helen’s Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 16,2015 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Benedict’s Retreat and Conference Center, 225 Masters Avenue, West St. Paul, Manitoba.
With the support of her family, Helen courageously faced declining health. Many thanks to the compassionate home care staff who helped her maintain her independence and remain in her home with Walter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Academy Class of 65 bursary fund, 550 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3M 0C1.

DR. GARRY CONRAD SCHROEDER, MD, FRCP
November 15, 1954 - December 28, 2014

It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved husband Garry who was forced to quit working from Cancer Care Manitoba due to acute illness in November 2014.
It was important to Garry that people knew he did not retire voluntarily and that illness coerced his leaving the medical profession. He had voiced that the perfect timing for his death would be to finish his week of call and then expire. Given a choice, there is no doubt that is exactly the scenario he would have picked. Always the consummate professional where patient care was first and foremost.
He did not want a lengthy obituary and honouring his wishes, this will be a relative short entry. He always said to those whom he mattered knew him and to those who didn't, it was of no consequence. He was a man of action, mostly anonymously; not one for flowery sentiment or public recognition. He was well suited to his profession, having served the people of Manitoba and Canada for nearly three decades as a physician.
Garry was a man of intense honour and integrity. His word and his handshake were sacred to him and he didn't give either lightly. His favourite all time TV series was Dallas and he loved it when JR said, "Contracts are made to be broken but a handshake is the word of God".
He was extremely generous with both his time and his money, always going and working the extra mile, as well as supporting many charities his entire adult life. Many patients also received the benefits of "A one-time social work stipend that only a physician could apply for on behalf of their patients". There was no need for them to bother themselves with the paperwork, he would do it for them. The next day, the fund was readily available. It was always patient care first and his dedication was reflected in his clinical practise every day, including time off as he would research like a fiend to ensure he was always up on the latest drug or therapy.
Garry was particularly interested in supporting the poor with social justice and their much needed medical attention. He also loved animals, "critters" as he affectionately referred to them and supported their well-being also. He was in many ways charmingly old fashioned and chivalrous.  He was a staunch defender of human equality. One such example was working with female Muslim residents who would ask if it was okay if they left to say their prayers. He would reply, "You don't ask me to say your prayers. You tell me".
There are so many examples of his goodness throughout his life both professionally and personally, but honouring his wishes, they are private and not to be on public display.
As his wife, I wish to express my deep appreciation to the kindness shown to Garry during his hospital stays; gifts, food, visits, prayers, and the best medicine of all, a cup of tea.  Following in his own way, those of you who were important to him know whom you are. It was the encouraging words and doing what you could to show compassion that deeply touched him.  Although he did not want many visitors, his affections and thoughtfulness were voiced as it was expressed to him people were thinking of him or praying for him. He would say thank you and want you all to know it was appreciated even if it could not be expressed in person. It did comfort him and make a difference in his final days.
All of the staff, in all parts of his hospital stays were deeply appreciated; not just the usual physicians and nurses but the auxiliary staff and in particular the nursing assistants who provided him much physical comfort.  He mentioned this several times. As his wife I also wish to express my deep gratitude for your expertise and kindness on HSC H4 and MICU.
The world is less of a better place because he is no longer in it. He will be deeply mourned and cherished.
A private family only service will be held to honour Garry's life.

She taught school in Fannystelle and Bruxells, Manitoba. On July 14, 1940 Cecile married Victor (Vic) Mager, whom she met while attending University. One son Marc Joseph, born February 5, 1942, blessed this union.  After three years in Winnipeg, Cecile, Vic and Marc moved to Maryfield where they enjoyed farming for seven years. In November 1950 they moved to St. Charles where they purchased a farm. However, that was short lived as the City of Winnipeg spread out to the St. Charles area and large parcels of land were sold for real estate development. They retained their family home and small acreage where they enjoyed gardening and playing with their grandchildren.  Once again their family home was sold to the City of Winnipeg, and they “moved” across the river to 6412 Roblin Boulevard. Sadly on January 13, 2005, Cecile’s loving husband Vic at the age of 88 passed into the Lord’s hands.
Cecile enjoyed the community of St. Charles Parish and accumulated many friends. An active member of St. Charles Parish and a member of the C.W.L., she loved art and had shown her hand in many paintings. Cecile loved to sew, and being only 4’10, her sewing machine was kept well-oiled for shortening all her clothes. Quilting was a great hobby too, Vic built her a rack and Cecile could be found hand stitching and stretching beautiful quilts. She taught her granddaughter, Colette, how to make her first quilt.  In Cecile’s younger years, Barbara was there to take her shopping and peruse the paper for Bingo Halls. She was a devoted mother to Marc, who was always ready to answer Cecile’s first alarm button, no matter the time of day or night. She lavished in the love and care by Colette, teased Jean-Paul with his cooking, and looked forward to an electrical problem that Andre could solve on one of his many visits. She looked forward to the visits from her great-grandchildren and posted their art on her fridge and walls for display. Faith, Rylee and Taylor loved visiting with grandma and all had their own ways of showing their love as did Meriena, Chantelle and Mitchel.  Cecile will be missed.
Mass of the Resurrection will be Celebrated on Monday, January19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg, MB, with Rev. Fr. Paul Tinguely, presiding.  Interment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.  Luncheon will be served by the Ladies of St. Charles Parish in the Lower Parish Hall following Mass, all are welcome.

JENNIE LEE PUSIEWICH
January 19, 1980 – January 9, 2015

Sadly and far too soon, Jennie passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a dignified and courageous fight with cancer.
Jennie will be terribly missed by her mother, Dianne (Ed); father, Bill; brother, Jason (Gabriela); her little nieces, Sadie and Danica; as well as many aunts; uncles; cousins; friends and colleagues. Welcoming her in Heaven are her two sets of grandparents and Jill. She was a loving daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, friend and helper. She was the first to forgive and the first to offer help.
Having a big heart and willingness to help those who needed it most led Jennie to a career as a youth probation officer. Her colleagues were a tight knit group, to which she referred as her work family.
Jennie loved many things in life. She loved to travel and was a sun-seeker, frequenting Mexico and other destinations with her cousins, and Arizona with her Mom and Ed. She also grew up camping, spending summers throughout her childhood with family and friends all over Canada and the United States, and spending much time at the lake in Lac du Bonnet.
A great joy in Jennies life were her animals. Sam, her childhood Cocker Spaniel, and her beloved Springer Spaniel Tucker were companions and friends to her. Tucker, especially, was a great comfort these past weeks. Jennie was especially thankful to the many people who cared for Tucker when she could not.
A celebration of Jennies life will be held on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street.
A sincere thank you to the many doctors, nurses and caregivers who were at Jennies side in her time of need. A special thank you to nurses Michelle and Jennifer and to Dr. Bruce Martin for their compassion and care.
Jennie loved all animals, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to an animal rescue shelter of your choice.
