ROBERT MARTIN WALL (BONEHEAD)

Following a lengthy illness, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Wall, age 59, with his family by his side on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Victoria Hospital.
Left to mourn Robert’s memory are his father Martin Wall (Corinne); half-sister Suzanne Saryazdi; siblings Marie Ducharme (Ken), David Wall (Anna), Edward Leclerc (Kathy), Gary Wall (Wendy), Alysse Champagne (Gord); niece Chantelle Ducharme (Nathan); nephew Kyle Ducharme; and his good friends Judy Shawn, Barry Buche and Scotty Owens. He was predeceased by his mother Agnes Wall (2009).
Robert was brilliant and talented. He loved to make people laugh; he spent time travelling across Western Canada and the USA perfecting his act. He impersonated famous and infamous people such as Joe Cocker and Mick Jagger.
Robert had many interests; his vast music collection, his huge comic collection, which at one time, included the coveted Spider Man #1, his love of Pub Darts into which he brought two of his brothers,  winning several local Pub Dart championships and his love of cars including his 69 Firebird, 67 Camaro and his 75 Beetle.
On Friday, March 21, 2014 Robert’s Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street @ Manitoba Avenue. For those who wish viewing will be held prior to the Service.
We would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospital for all their support and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

SHEILA CATHERINE WILLIAMS
(nee McQUADE)

On Tuesday, March 25, 2014 Sheila Catherine Williams, passed away peacefully at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 87 years.
Sheila is survived by sons Wayne (Lorraine) and Glen (Sheila); grandsons Jason, Derek, Kevin (mom Jackie), Shawn, Brett and Robin; great grandchildren Sawyer and Corbin; and step grandchildren Dalsin and Bianca. She was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1997.
Sheila was born July 12, 1926 to Fred and Hilda McQuade, and grew up in East Kildonan. Her two trademarks were her vibrant head of red hair and equally vibrant personality. A fun-loving, positive person, her outgoing, caring personality touched many hearts in her travels.
One of the first hearts Sheila touched was her husband Frank. Once married, Frank and Sheila bought a home at 170 Linden Avenue, just a short walk from the home that Sheila had lived in with her family at 149 Linden Avenue. After Frank passed away in 1997, Sheila – after having lived in the home at 170 Linden Avenue for 53 years – moved into an apartment at 1660 Henderson Highway, wanting to keep her ties with East Kildonan intact.
Sheila’s whole world revolved around a very small area of East Kildonan due mainly to the friendships she had developed – long-term friendships that she treasured. She also made many long-term friendships in the years she spent working at Birk’s Jewellers and then as a teaching assistant at Norquay School. The circle of friends that she made working at Norquay, led by the principal Mr. Pelletier, continued to meet for lunch at Rae and Jerry’s as recently as a couple of years ago. At 1660 Henderson, it was the norm for Sheila and her friends to leave their doors open so they could walk into each other’s apartment so they could visit for tea or conversation during the course of the day. One day, when the elevator wasn’t working, Sheila walked down eight floors to catch a bus to the casino with her friends. She was always a people person, and wasn’t about to be denied the pleasure of their company.
Not surprisingly, Sheila was also a devoted mother. After her sons Wayne and Glen were born, the family spent many years camping and going on family trips. Her unique sense of style carried through even to camping sites, where she could often be seen preparing meals on the Coleman stove in white slacks – not exactly the best clothing colour to be roughing it in. Many summers were also spent at Lac du Bonnet with close friends Beryl and Peter Larsson.
Later, when Frank pursued his dream of building a cabin cruiser boat, Sheila supported that dream without reservation. Then, after Frank acquired a beautiful piece of lakefront property at Hillside Beach, she and Frank built a family cottage, putting it together piece by piece as they could afford it. That cabin was a great source of pleasure for Sheila and Frank. Not only was it close to her sister Audrey and brother-in-law Ralph’s cottage, but it served as a base for family and friends to gather, spending many a night laughing and having dances and parties in the half-built cottage. Sheila was known to play her ukulele and sing a vast repertoire of songs at those gatherings, much to everyone’s delight.
In 2010, Sheila moved into Sterling House in Lindenwoods with major reservations. Most of her life had been spent in East Kildonan, and she now had to move to the city’s south end so Glen could be nearby to care for her. It didn’t take Sheila much time to adjust to her new setting. Before long, she had another circle of friends who all came to love this fun-loving lady because of her light-hearted attitude and endless supply of jokes. Sheila always carried a $20 bill with her with naked men on it, and often passed it off to unsuspecting people to see how they would react to the somewhat racy currency. Suffice it to say, her nearly three years at Sterling House were a great experience for everyone.
Most of all, Sheila loved having friends and family around her. We will always remember her birthday parties and family dinners, occasions where she could be counted on to show up in the most hilarious hat you’d ever seen. Her sense of humour was infectious, and made every gathering a memorable one.
Sheila’s passing has left us with a hole in our hearts and lives, but we rest easy in the knowledge that she has gone to join her love, Frank. Her fun-loving personality touched a lot of hearts; she was a ray of light in every situation, and her gift of humour and positivity will never be forgotten.
A private Family Service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Previne Mehta, who treated mom like she was a member of his family. We would also like to thank Dr. Johnson and Dr. Ogaranko at Cancer Care at the Victoria Hospital, and her nurses on the fifth floor. Through all of Sheila’s health challenges, there were numerous health care providers who cared for her and made the experience as comfortable as possible. Many of you became very close to her, and we appreciate how gently you cared for her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society or Cancer Care Manitoba in Sheila’s memory.

Harvey Giesbrecht Remanded to April 22, 2014

Giesbrecht Remanded to April 22

The court case involving former Beausejour Mayor Harvey Giesbrecht has been remanded to April 22.

The former mayor is facing 25 counts of fraud following a four-year RCMP investigation into allegations that money placed in the care of the Beausejour funeral home he operated was not used for its intended purpose.

The remand date was granted in Beausejour court on March 18. Giesbrecht did not make a personal appearance.

On Sept. 16, 2013, RCMP in Alberta served Giesbrecht with a summons to appear in Beausejour court in October to face 18 counts of fraud under $5,000 and seven counts of fraud over $5,000.

The charges stem from a time period between October 2003 and July 2009 when Giesbrecht was the owner of Russell’s Funeral Home Ltd. In Beausejour.

It is alleged that Giesbrecht received money from families for prearranged funerals and did not deposit it into trust funds, which contravenes the Prearranged Funeral Services Act in Manitoba.

Russell’s Funeral Home Ltd. Ceased operations with Giesbrecht leaving the province in 2009.

Giesbrecht was able to continue working in the funeral industry in Alberta, first in Leduc and more recently in Drayton Valley, where the RCMP served him.

Giesbrecht was first elected a councillor with the Town of Beausejour in 1995 and served two terms on council over a course of seven years. In 2002, he was elected mayor and served a four year term. He was voted out of office in 2006.

DOROTHY JEAN BIDEWELL

Dorothy Jean Bidewell died peacefully in her 97th year early in the morning of March 26, 2014 at Grace General Hospital.
Dorothy was born July 20, 1917 in Dauphin MB, the second daughter of Llewellyn and Madeleine (Secord) Williamson. She went to school in Lintlaw, SK and Dauphin and graduated as a registered nurse from St. Anthony’s Hospital in The Pas.  After graduation, she worked in Manitoba for some time but soon left for Vernon BC, which she considered “heaven on earth”, and a job at the Vernon General Hospital.  Dorothy loved nursing and often shared memories about the patients she cared for and the doctors and nurses she worked with.  She joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War and served in Ontario. During this time, she met a tall, dark, handsome pharmacist, who had just returned from an overseas posting.  She fell in love with Jack Bidewell and married him in Toronto in 1948.
Jack and Dorothy moved to Iroquois Falls ON, where daughters Frances and Laurie were born. Daughter Melanie, son Graeme and daughter Pamela were born at the old Grace Hospital after the family moved to Winnipeg.
Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved Jack in 2006. Also by her parents, her sisters Laura Imrie and Helen Inverarity and brothers Johnny and Archie.  She is survived by her children Frances, Laurie Holmes (Larry) of Hanna AB, Melanie, Graeme (Janice Duynisveld) and Pamela (Rick Kolesar), five grandchildren Shannon McBride, Michael Holmes, Alexander, Robyn and Reid Kolesar, four great-grandchildren, her sister Florence Chute of Kelowna BC, sisters-in-law Audrey Bidewell of Cambridge ON and Queenie Williamson of Flin Flon and many nieces and nephews.
Our mother deeply loved her family, friends, home and community. She was deeply loved in return and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Special thanks for the enduring love and support of her “Grace girls”, Gianna, Connie, Karen and Karen. Much gratitude to the devoted doctors and staff of Grace Hospital wards 3N and 5, home care workers, Dr. Andrew Jowett and his assistant Agnes and to all the others who supported her in her long and happy life.
In accordance with Dorothy’s wishes, no formal service will be held.  A family gathering is planned in the spring to honour her memory.
Instead of flowers, her family would appreciate donations to the Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg R3J 3M7.

Besides his friends Brent leaves to mourn his son Jason and partner Nadine of B.C.; adopted daughter Pauline in Alberta; his much loved life partner Robert Strickler of Virginia and Florida; and fondly loved Nova Scotia aunts, Hilda and Verna plus Uncle Earl and Aunt Ruth. He will be sorely missed by many friends and family across Canada and the U.S.
Brent was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 18, 1942, son of the late Scottie and Edna McVean. He had one brother, Darrell, who predeceased him.
In his youth Brent did marathon swimming, once swimming fifteen miles. At age 18 he joined the Meteorology School in Ottawa and weather dominated his career. He moved to Winnipeg in 1972. Prior to this he did tours in northern Ontario, the high Arctic and other centres. When Brent retired at age 52 he was head of finance and administration for Environment Canada’s central region. "Brent held a special love and kindness for everyone,” said one of his many friends. He was noted for his thoughtfulness for others and for his nonjudgmental attitude. He always gave people the benefit of the doubt and was frequently a volunteer in local organizations as well as supporting several Canadian charities.
In compliance with Brent’s wishes no Funeral Service will be held. His Interment will be held in the family plot this summer in Halifax, NS.

REGINALD ARTHUR TREACY

Peacefully, on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 after final goodbyes to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Reg passed from this life to the next.
Dad will be remembered by his three sons, Michael (Jennifer), Patrick (Heidi) and Ron.  He leaves behind his most cherished gift, his wife Dorothy; grandchildren Nicole and Michelle were fortunate to have spent time during their childhood with Dad up North at Fishing Lake Lodge. The lodge was built log by log with his boys and Dot and it was the center of his life until his retirement.
Reg was a man of great dreams and hard work and was relentless in his pursuit to bring Americans to Canada to revel in the wonderful Canadian north, where hunting and fishing were plentiful and the smell of Dot’s fresh bread woke you in the mornings. His boys will cherish memories of clearing the trees to build a runway at Fishing Lake, when no-one believed it possible. Balancing a grand piano between two canoes down the rapids was no easy feat, but Dad was never about easy.
Dad was born to Alfred and Sarah Treacy on September 19, 1921. Alfred had emigrated from Ireland in 1910 and set up a homestead in Balcarres, Saskatchewan. Dad was educated in the one room schoolhouse until the age of 13 when he moved with his older sister to Northern Saskatchewan to work on a mink ranch and then a lumberyard. By the time he turned 14 he was working a trap-line and by the end of his teens was a fur trader for the Hudson Bay Company.
Reg enlisted in the war and was assigned to R.C.A.F. Bomber Command Crew 429 Squadron in England and then later the Frontline 127 Spitfire Wing in Europe until the end of the war. He had a job waiting for him after the war with the Hudson's Bay. It was during his time working in Mattawa that Dot’s future was sealed. They were married in Hornpayne Ontario in 1948. Together they managed the Northern Outpost Trading Stores at Sandy Lake, Deer Lake and Pikangikum and finally in 1960 their own lodge.
Dad’s great grandchildren, Taylor, Liam, Brayden and Jesse will remember the man who always wore a hat and a woolen sweater, even in July, happily growing potatoes in his back yard. To the rest of us he will always be remembered as an adventurous soul with still another story to tell.
On Friday, April 11, 2014 Reg’s Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Road United Church, 613 St. Mary’s Road @ St. Anne’s Road with Rev. Alice Szemok, presider. Burial will follow in St. Vital Cemetery, 236 River Road.
We would like to thank Deer Lodge (Fourth Floor) staff for the kindness and compassion shown our father and all of us, in the last two years.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Deer Lodge Hospital.
