ALBERT HELMER OLSON

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather at the Grace Hospital on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at the age of 84.
Left to mourn Albert are his wife Hazel (his best friend for the past 59 years); their three children Mark (Leslie), Brenda (Chris) and Diane (Allan); and grandchildren: Kevin, Laura, Alana, Ryan and Connor. Also left to mourn are his brother Stanley, his sisters Dolly, Thelma and Irene, family and extended family members and his many, many friends. Albert is predeceased by his parents Jens and Astrid Olson, his brother Elwood, and his grandson Drew, who lost his life in a traffic accident in 2006 at the age of 17 and will always be in our thoughts.
Albert was born in Inwood, Manitoba, on July 31, 1930. He left home at age 15 to work for Ontario Hydro, creating a new hydro development on Lake Superior. He then took up an apprenticeship in plastering in 1948 and, in 1953, started his own plastering and stucco company. Albert went on to a very successful career in home building, land development and other related projects.
Albert was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge #145, the Optimist Club of Assiniboia, the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club and Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club, where he golfed with the same group for many, many years. Albert was also an accomplished curler: he was a three time Canadian Men’s Senior Curling Champion and was inducted into both the Manitoba and Canadian Curling Hall of Fame.
Albert was a true optimist who was warm, positive and had a real gift for making everyone around him feel special. He was a great talker who loved to laugh and put smiles on the faces of everyone he met. Albert could often be heard saying “there’s no way life could be better…” which was fitting because that is the way he lived his life to the end. He was a great believer in the power of positive thinking and the forces of the universe working together and always said that is what made him successful. Albert will be greatly missed by his family, his friends and by the many people he touched.
A celebration of Albert’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 15, at Grant Memorial Baptist Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
For those who can’t make it to the celebration and would like to share a story or add a comment about Albert, they can go to “Albert H. Olson Memories” on Facebook or visit the following link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/915762561772323/

KAROLINA WIKTOROWICZ
 (nee Domszy)
(1928-2014)

The Wiktorowicz family is heartbroken to announce Karolina’s peaceful passing on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the age of 86, surrounded by her family, after her long battle with cancer.
Karolina is survived by her husband Henry;sister, Genia Liusz (Gregory) and all her children; eight grandchildren, Barbara (Ben) and children Clare (Chris), Anna (Bryan) and Ruth Levin; Frank; Cecilia (Maurice) and daughter Emmanuelle Arpin; Mary (Mark) and sons Evan and Julien Garner; Paul; Hedy (John) and children, Chris and Leah Heppenstall. Karolina is pre-deceased by her parents, Peter and Frances Domszy; sisters, Helen Bator (Tony), Sophie Iskierski (Edward) and her brother, Joseph.
As a Polish refugee who immigrated to Canada in 1949, Karolina’s life was characterized by great adversity during her youth, followed by a peaceful and happy life in much of her adulthood.
The second youngest of five (three sisters and a brother), she was born in Ostrów Rzeszów, Poland, and resettled with her family on the eastern side of Poland in 1935 on a farm in Kłodno Wielkie. In February 1940, at the age of 12, she was deported with her family to Siberia during World War II (Soviet German alliance in the invasion of Poland). Karolina survived and when Amnesty was declared in June 1941 (Soviet Union joined the Allies), she and her family travelled southward, in search of the Polish Free Army. Due to starvation and a severe illness, her mother placed her and her younger sister, Sophie, in a Polish orphanage in Uzbekistan. She remained in the orphanage as it relocated several times to East Africa, Rhodesia and Zambia. In 1948, Karolina, her mother and sister went to Britain to be reunited with her family, then immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada to join her father’s sister.
In Winnipeg, she worked in a garment factory and soon met Henry, a Polish soldier who immigrated to Canada after contributing to the Allied victory in Monte Casino. Married in 1951, they began a new life together, surrounded by her extended family and a thriving Polish community. In 1962 they moved to Transcona, and she worked part-time in her husband’s upholstery business. Karolina was a loving, selfless, supportive mother having had six children, eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Her greatest joy was playing with and feeding her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, especially known for her perogies and barszcz (beet soup).  She nurtured a deep spiritual life and cherished many friendships. The family spent many happy summers at their cottage on Lake Winnipeg. Karolina overcame breast cancer in her mid-forties and thrived for another forty years. She gave generously to her community by volunteering at St. Joseph the Worker and St Andrew Bobola parishes, the Polish Veteran’s Association and Tache Nursing Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., in St. Joseph The Worker Roman Catholic Church, 505 Brewster St, Transcona with Rev. Fr. Jan Spyrka presiding. Interment will follow in the Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Cemetery, 4387 Main Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karolina’s memory to Ogniwo Polish Museum or WRHA Palliative Care Program c/o St Boniface General Hospital.

JOHN ROBERT BROWN
March 4, 1951 – August 6, 2014

John passed away peacefully in his sleep after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Left to survive John are his wife of 40 years Heather; three sons and their partners, John and Leah, Graeme and Lindsay, Aaron and Justine. He will also be missed by his family: sister Judi and Bob Lapointe, Tracey and Erich, Chloe and Willow Lapointe, Kerri and Michael, Jack and Bella Webber; sister Pat Brown and Jim Beveridge, Alex and Roger, Ian and Bryanne, and Andrew Beveridge; brother-in-law Drew and Jane McNichol, Eden and Graeme Simari, and Galen McNichol; sister-in-law Sandra McNichol and David MacDonald, and Gareth McNichol; and his 93 year old mother Evelyn who grieves his passing greatly. John was predeceased by his father Jack Brown and his in-laws Cliff and Nancy McNichol.
John was born in Winnipeg and spent most of his life here. He was a charismatic man with a keen intellect who loved to learn and was always studying something new. This drive for new learning led to a varied career path: teaching, sales, management, and wherever he went, he made good and lasting friendships. John will be missed by many close friends.
Family was John’s constant. He was a hands-on dad from the beginning and the constancy of his love and guidance shaped his boys into fine young men. He was taken from them too soon but the values and love he instilled in the boys will continue to guide them.
John’s eye for detail and aesthetics was a driving force in his life. He established order, appreciated beauty, loved and created art, enjoyed gardening and found being in nature nourished his soul. He loved music and most events, even trips, were accompanied by carefully chosen music. He had a keen sense of humor, and loved to perform and entertain, especially in his younger years.
A Celebration of John’s Life is planned for Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Norbert Arts Center located at 100 Rue des Ruines du Monastere, St. Norbert, MB.
The family would like to thank the medical people who went the extra mile and made such a difference in John’s lengthy battle, the doctors and nurses at Cancer Care and the St. Boniface Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, we would ask that all interested in honoring John make a donation in his name to the Palliative Care Endowment Fund through the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation (www.saintboniface.ca). John ended his life in this peaceful caring place.

JOSEPHINE MARSDEN SHEANE
1921 - 2014

On Thursday, August 21, 2014 Josephine Marsden Sheane passed away peacefully at Riverview Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 93 years.
Josephine is survived by her four children and their spouses as well as seven grandchildren: Juanita (Greg Giesbrecht), sons Christopher and Sean and his wife Jennifer Shaw, Blair (Sonia), Gary (Inga, son Ian) and Graham (Judy, daughters Jenny, Alison, Emily and Norma); as well as by nieces and nephews in Canada, England and Tasmania. She was predeceased by husband Jim (1983); her only brother Cyril Harrison and his wife Marjorie in England; and her parents, Lily and William Harrison of England.
Mom, born in England, was active in Brownies and Girl Guides from the age of eight years. She was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Canadian Association of Girl Guides and was made an Honourary Girl Guide of Canada. Following her retirement from several Guiding positions she joined the Trefoil Guild and continued to serve the Girl Guide Association. Mom travelled extensively after Dad passed away often meeting up with friends from her long association in the guiding movement. She had friends in England, Scotland, Australia, and of course all over Canada. One of her favourite spots was her cottage at Clearwater Lake, Manitoba that she enjoyed for over forty years. Mom had her first airplane ride with aviation pioneer Tom Lamb when she arrived in Canada from England in 1946 as a war bride and flew to meet Dad at his posting with the federal government in Norway House, Manitoba. Three of her children were born in Norway House and Mom often said those Norway House days were among her happiest. She followed Jim as his job took him to Selkirk, Manitoba; Christian Island, Ontario; Ilford, Manitoba; Mirimichi, New Brunswick; The Pas, Manitoba; Thompson Manitoba and finally to their retirement home in Winnipeg. Mom enjoyed an interesting and adventurous life starting Brownie Packs or Girl Guide Companies wherever they were needed in the small communities in which they lived. She formed the First Christian Island Brownie Pack and the First Christian Island Girl Guide Company in the mid 1950's. All the girls involved but one were First Nations. When Dad was Superintendent of the Nelson River Agency in the 1960's based out of Ilford, MB on "The Bay Line," Mom established a Lone Guide Company for girls who lived in several of the small communities along what was then called The Hudson Bay Railroad running from The Pas to Churchill. The girls earned their badges and meetings were conducted via written correspondence through the Post Office. Mom even participated as a leader in a Cub Scout group when one was needed in Mirimichi, NB when her youngest son was in Cubs. She and Dad were active volunteers in the communities in which they lived serving with the Children's Aid Society in New Brunswick, Rotary International and The School Board in The Pas, MB. Mom often volunteered with the Anglican Church in various roles, as well as with The Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival in The Pas, MB, to name a few. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, knitting, reading, and travel. Mom loved her grandchildren and besides attending their sports or school events, took them travelling with her when she could. There are not enough words to describe our Mom's strength of character, generosity and spirit. She will be missed.

WILLIAM “BILL” ROCKWELL

With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Thomas William Rockwell on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the age of 55 years.
Left to mourn Bill’s memory are his brother Bruce (Alison); nephews Ray Dock (Maureen), Keith Dock (Claudia), Russell Dock, Scott Rockwell (Aly), Brenden Rockwell; great nephews and nieces Jordie, Cherise, Shawna and Bryon. He was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Winnie; sister Roma (Polet); and brother Barrie.
Bill's struggles in life started early as a teenager. He injured his back and missed nearly two years of school. He tried hard to get his education but never finished. He found his place at the Boys and Girls Club on Dufferin Avenue. There, Bill learned about life and made many friends. Years later, he returned as a volunteer where Bill truly developed a passion for helping anyone and anywhere from his experiences at the club. After moving to the West Broadway area, Bill found another home at the West Broadway Community Ministry. Bill also became a referee with the River City Wrestling group. He had so many great stories of the matches, the fun, and just being part of his biggest passion, Wrestling - thank you boys! Bill had a special place in his heart for Scott, Brenden and Jordie; he was their Uncle Buck. He loved every minute he was with you guys.
Diabetes took its toll on Bill. In 2012, he had a leg amputated but being in a wheelchair certainly did not slow him down. He kept up with the ministry and his family there. He will always be remembered for his beaming smile and his witty comments.
A Service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in West Broadway Community Ministry Church, 222 Furby Street.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful people who were so important to Billy; you were such a big part of his life. A special thank you to Jackie, Tammy and Lynda for always being there for him. Thank you to all that have touched his life one way or another.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to West Broadway Community Ministry, 102 – 222 Furby Street.

DEBORAH MAY TAYLOR

Sadly and unexpectedly, our mother, grandmother, friend, colleague and mentor Deborah Taylor passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014 in Winnipeg.
Growing up in Calgary, Alberta Deb was one of eight children to her parents Marion Nason and Clyde Stickley. She was very well loved by her surviving family including her son Shane, his wife Natasha and grandchildren Shayna, Adrienna and Tyler; Deb’s two brothers Danny and Robin; many nieces and nephews including Lori as well as her long-time friends June Therrien and Peter Grozdanovic. She was predeceased by both parents; as well as her sisters Judy and Brenda and brothers Greg, Clyde and Bradley.
Deb was a formidable woman who was passionate about gymnastics and animals with a special love for pug dogs and animals in need.  She coached artistic gymnastics for most of her life, originally in Calgary and since the mid-1990’s in Winnipeg at Springers Gymnastics Club. Over the years Deb became a beloved and respected cornerstone of the gymnastics community and was an inspiration to many athletes and coaches. She was honored in 2012 as a woman of outstanding leadership in Canada by The International Women’s Leadership Association.
Being the recreational director at Springers for many years, Deb’s job title could just as well have read “heart and soul of Springers”.  She was committed fully to ensuring the club was the best possible place for athletes to train and learn, coaches to work and parents to watch proudly as these young athletes grew up.  From cleaning up the “spills” in the gym, which caused many others to speedily evacuate the area, to ensuring that there was always a small handful of candy as a special thank you to a coach, or as a job well done reward to an athlete – Deb was always pouring out her heart to others.
Deb’s family was huge – she touched the lives of so many – we will all miss her dearly.  Cremation has taken place and Shane will ensure his Mom makes her long planned trip to Disneyland where her ashes will be scattered.  A celebration of Deb’s life is being planned for September.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Deb’s memory to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.
