GLADYS HELEN McNEILL
(THOROGOOD, nee PRESTON)
March 3, 1915 – July 20, 2014

On Sunday, July 20, 2014, Gladys McNeill passed away peacefully at Oakview Place at the age of 99 years.
Gladys was born in Winnipeg, in 1915, of Scottish parents. She survived the Spanish influenza at the age of three, and remembers seeing her father going off to the Winnipeg General Strike in 1919 (her mother told Mr. Preston to be careful). Her youngest son was born on VE-Day. She connected us all to history and to ourselves in ways that textbooks never could.  Gladys challenged and delighted us, and was still dancing around the dinner table as recently as last year.
Gladys was a kind and loving lady who touched the hearts of many and made lasting friendships and always had a positive attitude. She was a long-time member of Patricia Chapter #8, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Sturgeon Creek United Church. Ray and Sandra remember the great times at the cottage at Gull Lake with long-time friends, the Gundrums.  Following the death of Athol, Gladys married Edward McNeill and spent a number of years wintering in Weslaco, Texas.  She lived in the Courts of St. James and swam every day.  She moved into the Westhaven six years ago.  Gladys often ran down ten flights of stairs at lunchtime, faster than her great-grandchildren, to avoid the ‘old people and their walkers’ in the elevator—at the age of 97.
Gladys was predeceased by her first husband, Athol Thorogood; and son Murray; and second husband, Edward McNeill.  She was also predeceased by her four siblings, Doris, May, Edna, and James.  She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (William Bottle) of Winnipeg; and son, Raymond (Camilla Thorogood) of Tofino, B.C.  She is also survived by four grandchildren, Barbara (Colin Steele), Ross (Bobbi Zimmer), Gaylene (Kevin Gibbs), and Larissa (Jeff Rafuse); nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces; nephews; cousins; and extended family.
A service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive, St. James.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gladys’ name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

MICHAEL MASLANKA

With courage and dignity, Michael Maslanka, of Winnipeg, passed on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the age of 93.
Michael’s memory will be held dearly by his loving wife of 68 years Leokadia (Lodzia); sister Maria; sons Dan (Debra), Richard (Susan); and grandchildren Ben, Nick, Kerri, and Evan. He was predeceased by his brothers Kazimierz, Ignacy, and John.
On December 28, 1920 Michael was born in Trembowla, Poland, to Wojciech and Agnieszka Maslanka. He was the second eldest of five children. The stability of life abruptly ended, when at 19 years of age, Michael and his family were separated from one another. He was forcibly taken to a northern labour camp in the Soviet Union at the inception of World War II. Following his internment, he made his way through Iran, Iraq, and Africa, to the safety of Great Britain, where he enlisted in the Polish Air Force, a contingent of the R.A.F. Given the rank of flight sergeant and role of radio navigator, Michael proudly served, notably in the Battle of the Atlantic, and was decorated. In 1946, he met and married Lodzia, who served in the Polish Auxiliary Air Force, and shared the same R.A.F. station of Hucknall in Nottingham. Following their emigration to Canada, Michael and Lodzia began their new family in Winnipeg. Here in the early 1950’s, Michael applied his acquired skills as a tailor, working first with the Manitoba Clothing Co., and then finally as a much admired head designer and manager with the Freed & Freed Co., until well past the age of  65. During his tenure, Michael was well known within the Canadian Department of Supply and Services for the precise fitment of military tunics, which he designed. He was also known for producing quality outer wear under the London Fog label. Michael was well liked by his co-workers and respected as a mentor. He earned many friends in his other pursuits as a golfer, a curler, and a fisher. He also served on the executive as Vice President of the Polish Combatants Association Branch #13 Winnipeg.  Michael never failed nor refused to provide for his family. He always extended his help or his advice to others when he could.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Friday, August 1, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant, presiding. Interment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
The family is grateful and appreciative for the compassionate care provided to Michael at Riverview Health Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

GEORGE “CLIFF” CLIFFORD FRYERS
August 14, 1921-July 28, 2014

With deep sadness we announce the passing George Clifford Fryers, Retired Captain of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, on Monday, July 28, 2014 at Lake of the Woods Hospital, Kenora, ON, at the age of 92 years.
Left to cherish Cliff’s memory are his beloved wife Marie; children Pat (Ron), Don (Laureen), Nancy (Lloyd), Bob (Jenny); step-son Gary Snell; as well as by several grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
Cliff was born in Saskatoon, the youngest of five children. He lived most of his life in Winnipeg and graduated from Kelvin High School. He volunteered and proudly served for four years in World War II as a captain of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada serving in France. When Cliff returned from the war, he completed his training as an accountant for his career until he became a business owner and partner in Norwood Tent and Awning.
While growing up, Cliff loved family holidays at Long Pine Lake, Ingolf, Ontario which he later shared with his own children. With Marie, Cliff continued to enjoy their lake community life with good friends at Hockey Haven, Ontario. Their ongoing support and love, along with the very skilled and caring staff at Kenora's Lakehead Hospital, have helped immensely at this very sad time.
Since retiring 20 years ago Cliff has enjoyed his family, volunteer driving, friends and much travel with Marie whom he married in 2009 at Westworth United Church. He and Marie resided in Winnipeg and enjoyed a loving relationship together. Laughter, mirth and watching "The Wheelie" were their hallmark. Cliff renewed his driver's license by passing his first written and performance test in June at the age of 92. The only comment by the tester was "you are a little slow".
Cliff was a joy to his family and he loved all of them. His life was enhanced by his grandchildren who would enjoy a back and forth teasing relationship with him and bring much laughter into Cliff’s life, as he did to theirs. He was a wonderful story teller; stories built on extensive, usually accurate detail and colour. Cliff truly loved people, was interested in their lives and remembered what was going on for them. His enduring, beaming smile was directed to everyone and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, please donate by cheque, in memory of Cliff to The Royal Canadian Legion, Dominion Command, 86 Aird Place, Kanata, ON K2L 0A1. (Please note as memo on the cheque "Poppy Fund - Cliff Fryers").
A Funeral to celebrate Cliff's life will be held on Tuesday, August 5, at 2:00 p.m. in Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

JEAN JAMES

Quietly, Jean passed away at Concordia Hospital on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at the age of 91 years, leaving her husband, Arthur; children Brian (Karen), Stuart, and Tony; grandchildren Alison, Aaron, Daniel, Michael, Alexandria, Hope, and Andrew; her great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins in Australia and Scotland to mourn her passing and reflect on how she touched each of their lives.
Jean was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Annie Miller; brothers Billy and Tommy; her sister Joanne, and second son, Ian.
On February 18, 1923, Jean was born in Stirling, Scotland, and instantly established herself as a forceful presence in the large clan of proud Scots there and in the nearby towns and villages. While still a teenager, she and her family moved to Greenford, England shortly before the Second World War. Jean was called up in 1943 and began service in the army (ATS) at the base in Greenford.
Jean’s love of big band music and “proper” dancing brought her future husband, Arthur into her life at the height of the war during a base dance. After a three month courtship, they married on June 25, 1944 and so began an enduring 70 year partnership. In the years following the war, she set up house at British Army bases throughout England, establishing homes for her growing family over and over again, the highlight being a brief few years in Malaya where Jean could indulge in her love of social affairs, and where she and Arthur enjoyed the many balls and parties and where they became renowned as the best dancers in her large and lively set of friends.
Always eager and willing to engage in adventures, Jean joined Arthur in their greatest of all when she packed up everyone and everything she had and emigrated to Canada in 1959, joining her brother, sister, and parents, who had all resettled in Winnipeg a few years earlier. Starting from scratch was never a daunting prospect for Jean and, in short order, she had her house and family in order and had acquired a long list of new friends, most of whom would be Jean’s life-long friends.
Jean will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her; who loved her.
A private service will be held in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.

Next, he served in the RCAF as a navigator (flying officer) Squadron #319, serving in Centralia, ON; Cold Lake, AB; North Bay, ON; Baden Solligin, W. Germany; Trenton, ON; and Winnipeg, MB. In 1960 he joined Air Canada as an accounting clerk, then group head. By 1965, he started work at Revenue Canada as an auditor and moved up to senior field audit group head and then Chief Internal Audit. Lou took early retirement at age 55, in 1988.
Lou’s love of golf started at the seaside links of Algonguin Hotel in his hometown of St. Andrews. He continued to play casually as long as he was able. He enjoyed volunteering over the course of his life. After his three sons were born Lou helped start the original Laura Secord Community Club, in the late 1960's. Later he served as the longtime treasurer of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League. Once Lou was retired, he started his own tax consulting business. At the same time he spent many hours babysitting his grandkids and attending their sporting activities. Lou spent all his last 52 years living in the same home in the Wolsely neighbourhood. He loved to sit in his lawn chair, read his Free Press newspaper and puff on his cigar. Lou thoroughly enjoyed meeting and visiting with all the neighbours walking by, both young and old, two-legged and four-legged. (The corner of Aubrey and Palmerston will never be the same)

ROBERT “BOB” JOHN GAIR

It is with great sadness the family of Bob Gair announces his passing on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the age of 73 years. Bob was born on April 4, 1941 and made Winnipeg his home for over six decades.
Left to forever remember Bob are his loving wife of 48 years, Dorothy; children: Shannon, Shelley (Tony), and Stacey Helen; three grandsons: James, Robbie and Declan; brothers: Bill, Dave, Cameron, Alec and Gregg; sisters: Cathie and Pam; a large extended family and a great many friends.  He was predeceased by brothers Johnny and Brad; sister Patricia; and parents Patrick and Pearl Gair.
Bob owned and operated Artistic Creations and Flag City with his brother Johnny for over 40 years, during which time he forged many lasting relationships within the business community. His personality could fill a room of its own, and his reputation as a charismatic dealmaker will be remembered by many.
As a member of the Optimist Club of Assiniboia for many years, Bob served as its President from 1984-85.  During those years he made great friendships enduring to this day and received numerous awards for his service to the community.
Bob enjoyed curling, golf, listening to Leonard Cohen, plotting new adventures, landscaping and travelling. He thought cruises were the perfect holiday and embarked on 17 such voyages with his wife and friends.
“Bobby”, as he was called by his grandsons, was a wonderful grandfather, always creating new games to play, jobs for them to do and was easy with the treats.  He was much loved and will be greatly missed by the little guys.
Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Avenue @ Rouge Road with Rev. Fr. Gerald Langevin presiding.
