RUTH LOIS WATERS

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Ruth Lois Waters (nee Ereaux) on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Left to mourn Ruth’s passing is her husband Reid; children Linda (Jeff Reese), Stephen, Jennifer, Ashley, of Palo Alto, James (Elaine Bradbury) William, Hayley, of Guelph, Mary (Jim Hrichishen) Christopher, Laura, Melissa, Daniel, of Winnipeg, Susan (Marcos Alvarez) Lucas, Eric, Jonah, of Ottawa; brother and sister-in-law (Jim and Diane Ereaux); and her ever faithful companion, Sean.
Ruth was born in Montreal on January 16, 1933; daughter of Dr. Lemuel and Mrs Florence Ereaux. She graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital in nursing in 1953, where she was head nurse of the Neonatal ICU nursery.  Her kindness and special gift with infants would later be treasured by her children and grandchildren.
In Montreal, Ruth met her partner and love of her life of over 56 years, William Reid Waters, a young doctor from Regina, Saskatchewan. She and Reid married on June 23, 1956 at the Notre Dame Cathedral. They lived in Montreal for several years before moving to Winnipeg in the 1960’s where Ruth helped Reid launch his practice in Plastic Surgery and was actively involved in the financial management of Plastic Surgery Associates and the Western Surgery Centre.  She supported Reid and raised their four children with such patience, grace, enthusiasm, energy, kindness and unwavering and unconditional love. With her intelligence and extraordinary creativity, Ruth mastered everything she touched or did; she was an amazing cook, master quilter, knitter, gardener and business women.  With seemingly infinite energy, she also volunteered for the Children's Aid Society, Junior League of Winnipeg, University of Winnipeg Women’s Club, was a board member of the Manitoba Opera and an avid supporter of the arts.
Ruth’s love of nature and the Lake was fostered as a child at Lac Denis, in the Laurentians. She had spent every summer for the last 50 years with family on Mackies Island, at Lake of the Woods, where many happy times and fond memories reside with family and friends.
Funeral Liturgy will be Celebrated on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant presiding.
The family would like to thank the nurses of the Palliative Care at St. Boniface Hospital. Special and heartfelt thanks, goes to Heather Heslop.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Ruth’s memory to the Manitoba Opera or the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation.

JOHN MCLEOD
1947 - 2013

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John McLeod on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Left to cherish John’s memory are his stepchildren Jeremy, Jason and Gaylena. He was predeceased by his parents Duncan and Betty, and his beloved wife Rita.
John was a wonderful man with a heart of gold. He was loved, respected and very much appreciated by his stepchildren. They will miss his sense of humour, his love and constant support. He enjoyed sports, both watching and playing. Jason has many happy memories of them playing basketball together. John loved the simple things in life; staying at home with Rita watching a movie, she with her glass of wine, he with his can of Tab.
Born in Eau Clare, Wisconsin, John later moved with his family to Las Vegas as a teenager. In 1967 he came to Winnipeg to work at the Winnipeg Free Press and later had a long, successful career at Costco. He was passionate about electronics and loved sharing his knowledge with customers.
John took many trips to Las Vegas with Rita and her children, and reveled in the role of tourist guide for a city he loved. They had so much fun as a family; these trips created many happy memories for Jeremy, Jason and Gaylena. They are memories they will always cherish.
A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013, at 10 a.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive.
A donation in John's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160 - 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, or online at https://www.cancercarefdn.mb.ca(Ways to Help).

RUBY TURNER
December 4, 1919 - February 6, 2013

Peacefully, with her family by her side, our loving and devoted Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma, Ruby Turner (nee Reader) passed away at the Oakview Place Personal Home.
Ruby will be deeply missed by her daughter Dawn (Mike); daughter-in-law Wendy; grandchildren Jim (Tina), Kristin (Dana), Ryan (Jenna) and Blair (Michelle); great grandchildren Mae, Jake and Addison; as well as by her sister Ruth.  She was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1973; son Jim in 2011; as well as by parents Fred and Violet; brothers Percy, Ray and Rolly; and sister June.
Born and raised in Winnipeg; Ruby lived her entire life in St. James.  She married Jim in 1948 and they spent many happy years together with their favourite times being at the cabin at Wendigo which she helped Jim build.  They especially enjoyed fishing which is something her family continues to love to do.  Ruby began her career as a hairdresser but in the mid 1960’s she began to work at the women’s clothing store D’Allairds where she eventually became store manager and worked there until retiring in 1984. She loved her many crafts, especially needlepoint, but would master anything she tried.  She spent many hours knitting for CancerCare and hospitals and has left her family and friends beautiful pieces which we all will treasure.  Above all else, Ruby was the most unselfish, generous and giving person who always thought of others before herself and always maintained a positive outlook in the face of any challenge.  She was the most wonderful Mom and Grandma we could have asked for and we will all miss her so much.
In compliance with Ruby’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held.
Special thanks to the staff on the 3rdfloor of Oakview Place for the loving care you gave to Mom and for your help to the family during the last few days.  We appreciate it more than we can say.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Ruby’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 – 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.

Richard Wojcik Funeral Director - When Your Parent Dies Tips

When Your Parent Dies
Here are some tips that may help you and the rest of the family recover from the death of your parents.
1.    Resist the temptation to dismiss their death as "timely" or "inevitable". While this is one way to rationalize the loss, it doesn't touch your emotions. You have experienced a significant loss and you need to take time to grieve. The majority of people whose parents die are employed full time. A three-day bereavement leave isn't enough time to deal with this loss. Be aware of the need to adjust your personal schedule to take time to grieve.
2.    Work at keeping the lines of communication open between you and your siblings. They understand more than anyone what your loss entails. Remember each member of the family has a personal loss and each will mourn the death of your parent for different reasons and in different ways.
3.    Find one or two close friends with whom you can talk. People often say, "My friends don't want to hear about this!" All your friends won't, but ask one or two for permission to use them as sounding boards. There are also professionals you may call on: your doctor, your clergy, a counsellor or your funeral director.
4.    Do something to memorialize your parent. This could be a donation to a favourite charity. It could be a memorial in your family church. If possible you may want to create a permanent memorial at his or her college or university. Perhaps you would like to plant a tree in memory of your parent.
5.    Draw on the resources of your faith to sustain you. How does your faith or spirituality address the issue of dying? How does it help you make sense of life? Does it help you answer your questions?
6.    Although your parent is physically dead, he or she will continue to live through you. The values your parent gave you will affect you - for better or worse - for the rest of your life. Take what is good from them and incorporate it more fully into your life and be thankful for the good you received.

OSWALD EDWARD WHITTEN
July 18, 1926 – January 28, 2013

Peacefully, after a lengthy struggle with vascular dementia, Ozzie passed away at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 86 years.
Left to cherish Ozzie’s memory are his partner and best friend, Russ Thompson; sister Donna Magee of Melfort, SK; brother Wally Whitten of Boissevain, MB; sister in law Sylvia Whitten of High River, AB; brother in law Bill McMechan of Kelowna, BC; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Debby (Smithson); sister Vera McMechan and brother Bob Whitten.
Ozzie was born in Pipestone, MB and grew up on the family farm near Elgin, MB. He taught school briefly near Hartney, MB before being drafted into the army in 1944. After his discharge in 1945, Ozzie worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce for ten years, at branches in SK, northwest ON and in Winnipeg. He grew tired of balancing people’s cheque books and cleaning out files however, and his earlier short stint as a teacher beckoned him back. In the late 1950’s he enrolled at United College (U. of W.) and obtained his degree. His high school teaching career began in Roland, MB and continued in Gladstone, MB for 27 years before his relocation to Charleswood in 1994.
Ozzie loved language and taught French and English throughout his career. He continued his studies with courses at the Université de Laval in Quebec City and at the Université de Poitiers’ Language Institute in Tours, France. He also taught for a year in Lachute, Quebec at the height of the F.L.Q. Crisis in 1970.
Another love of Ozzie’s life was drama and he produced many musicals and plays while in Gladstone. He even took drama classes at the Banff School of Fine Arts where one of his classmates was a young Michael J. Fox!
And all this from a farm boy who did so poorly in school that he had to repeat part of his grade 12 in order to get his high school diploma!
Perhaps Ozzie’s greatest passion was art. He loved to interpret the works of the Impressionists and his paintings are in private collections in many parts of the world.
Travel was also a great part of Ozzie’s life and, with his partner, there were many trips to Mexico, the USA, New Zealand, the Caribbean and Europe, especially France and Portugal. Spending a month in Paris would be a highlight in anyone’s life.
Ozzie loved to cook, loved a good party and loved good times with good friends. In short, he loved life and loved people!
Our great thanks to all the staff and caregivers on T3 at Deer Lodge Centre. Their kindness and devotion was exemplary through Ozzie’s months of residency, and they became our friends.
A reception celebrating Ozzie’s life will be held at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Boulevard on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.

Left to cherish Ken's memory are his siblings Pat (Melvin) Webber of Burlington, ON; Colleen (Roger) Moir of Winnipeg, MB; and James (Brenda) Dennis of Cochrane, AB; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ken was born in Winnipeg at the old Grace Hospital. He attended Lord Roberts and Churchill High Schools. His early interests were hockey and tobogganing on the river bank, ball hockey on the street with neighbourhood friends, following the professional sports teams and of course, his love of learning. Ken enjoyed canoe trips with Dad and family car trips on summer vacations. He attended the University of Manitoba (1964-1970) earning his Bachelor of Commerce and Masters Degrees. He then went on to obtain his Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from St. Johns College at Oxford University, in England (1971 to 1976). Ken began his working career as a lecturer at the University of Manitoba Economics Department in 1969 and in 1970 went to Ottawa to work on the Prices and Income Commission. After completing his studies in Oxford, Ken returned to the University of Manitoba as a lecturer in 1979. He achieved Assistant Professor status in 1981 and received Tenure in 1986, becoming Associate Professor. In 2007, he retired with the title of Senior Scholar. Ken was respected by his colleagues and students. He enjoyed an active life playing tennis at the Wildwood and Unicity Racket Clubs. He had a life-long love of music and spent many hours enjoying his extensive collection. Ken was an avid billiards player and shared many games over the last decade with his University of Manitoba friends. After his retirement, Ken spent many hours pursuing his photography hobby; pictorially documenting buildings of Winnipeg. He had a great interest in architecture and also pursued his interest in maps and layouts of many cities. Ken was well read and a wonderful conversationalist. He possessed a remarkable sense of humour and will be missed by his family and friends. We are grateful for the time that we have been given, to spend with him. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at the Victoria General Hospital, Deer Lodge and the Grace Hospital for their patience and caring. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Ken's Life will be held Friday, September 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., at The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent. Should friends desire, donations may be made to their charity of choice.

January 7, 1927 - August 28, 2012
Peacefully on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, Kay passed away at Oakview Place Personal Care Home, with her daughters by her side. Kay is survived by her four daughters, Kerry, Wendy (Marv Snider), Nancy and Jill (Daryl Hooke); and by the lights of her life, her grandchildren, Alexa and Ben Hooke. She was predeceased by her husband Garth in 2008. Mom grew up in Riverton with her parents Eysteinn and Helga and brother Jon. She moved to Winnipeg when she was 16. She and Garth were married in 1948 and spent almost 60 wonderful years together; most of them at 333 Rita, a house many called home. Mom was never happier than when sitting in her living room or at her dining room table surrounded by family and friends. Mom was a proud charter member of PEO Chapter N and received her 60 year pin this past spring. PEO was a very important part of mom's life and her best friends were always her PEO sisters. On Tuesday, September 4, 2012, Kay's Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street @ Manitoba Avenue. MARIANNE GERMAIN PERRY (nee RICHARD)
December 11, 1914 - August 31, 2012
Her journey is over. A bright light in our lives has gone out. With great sadness and pride we write the obituary of our mother and grandmother, Marianne. Mom was born in Shell River, Saskatchewan to Dilima (Drolet) and Hildovert Richard. She had 13 siblings, four of whom died in infancy. Marianne was the last survivor, and carried her brothers and sisters, whom she loved dearly, in her heart until the end. Mom is remembered by her five children, Joseph (Cathy), Gene (Marthe), Bill/Jim (Jacqui), Ernie (Darlene), and Gloria, as well as 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Mom's childhood and teenage years were spent in the lean and rugged environment of a rural Saskatchewan homestead, where her tireless work ethic and immense strength of character developed at an early age. These qualities, along with her endless joie de vivre, would guide and define Marianne for the rest of her long and remarkable life. In 1948 Marianne left a difficult marriage at a time when virtually no supports existed for a woman on her own. With limited education and steadfast determination, she moved to Winnipeg to build a better life for herself and her children. Once establishing herself in her new city, she fought tirelessly to reunite her children and re-establish her family in a stable and loving home. How heroic and difficult it was for her to independently support, nurture and raise her large household is truly inspirational. Mom was an exceptionally gifted seamstress. Having taught herself to sew as a young girl, Mom not only made beautifully tailored shirts for her boys, created snow suits for her children out of old adult coats, and continued to sew beautiful clothing and square-dancing dresses for most of her life, she used these talents to earn a living. She worked at Eaton's in the catalogue building sewing men's shirts, at Jacob and Crowley's sewing coats, and at Gaults where she taught herself to sew draperies. When her summer holidays came around, always the tireless worker, Marianne worked in the dining room of the Marlborough Hotel to keep earning for her family. A fiercely independent woman, Mom liked to share the story of how she applied for an Eaton's card upon her arrival in Winnipeg, and was told it would require her husband's approval. Never one to be easily discouraged, Marianne smiled sweetly, said OK , and went home to forge the necessary signature. She had that card until Eaton's was demolished, she used it often, and as a matter of pride, never once paid a penny of interest. She also bought both of her cars with cash and always kept immaculate records of her finances. In 1950 Marianne purchased her own home, where she raised her five children with no financial assistance from any source. In 1959 she started her own business, Marianne Perry Draperies, building an addition to the back of her home to house her drapery shop. She ran every aspect of her business, from the office paperwork to quoting on all jobs, big or small, sewing the draperies, and with the help of her son Gene, installing draperies and tracks. Over the years, her work could be found in the Winnipeg International Airport, the Bank of Montreal, University of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Clinic, as well as countless Winnipeg homes. With the help of four employees, she also did work for Sears, The Bay and George N. Jackson. A business owner working 16-hour days, a single mother raising five children independently, Mom kept a spotless home, put a hot meal on the table every night, and ironed everything. We awoke on many a Saturday to the smell of Simonize wax on the hardwood floors. She also led a varied and active social life. She was a good sport and loved to dress up on a Saturday night and go dancing. She enjoyed socializing and sought out positive people in her life. As a prominent business owner, she was admired and respected by friends and business associates. At age 54, Marianne learned to drive, and it was one of the things she loved to do most, claiming it was her freedom. At age 59, she enrolled in continuing education at Red River College. Receiving her diploma was one of the proudest moments of her life. For all her hard work ethic and her focus on being a responsible role model for her children, Mom was equally generous, warm and endlessly fun. She loved her children unconditionally, with an immeasurable loyalty and bottomless heart. When Marianne retired from her business in 1987, she sold her house and became one of the original members of the co-op at 360 Osborne Street where she lived for 24 wonderful years. She loved her suite and the all friends she made there. She spent many years wintering in Mesa, Arizona where she golfed and square danced twice a week. Later, Marianne enjoyed a lovely spot by Boundary Creek in Wildwood Park at Winnipeg Beach, which she shared with her daughter Gloria, and grandson Ted and his wife Anna. She absolutely loved to spend an afternoon in the gazebo, napping and watching the creek flowing past. Mom had an endless zest for life, a wonderful twinkle in her eye, was flawlessly photogenic, and always wore a warm smile. She was young at heart up to her last days. She was truly an exceptional woman, before her time. In keeping with Mom's wishes, there will be no Funeral. However, there is a memory stone in her honour at the duck pond at Assiniboine Park. It can be found on the lower level in row 2, brick 17. We would be happy if family and friends would visit and think of her a while, a courageous woman and our loving Mom. We wish to thank Dr. Burke and the staff of Tuxedo Villa for taking good care of our Mom during the last six months of her life.
